Each week we will be sharing a tip from our school psychologist, Mrs. Rollins.

Combatting Depression Tip 4

This week’s tip is to leave the future where it belongs. Worrying about the uncertainty of the future can cause stress and anxiety. When we chronically worry, we can catastrophize normal things that happen to us as being a bigger deal than they are. Those feelings can then overwhelm us and cause depression.

In my practice and personal life, I have seen the worst of depression occur when a person believes completely that life will not get better. They mentally see every door closed to them and they believe the current awful state they are in is what will always be.

These feelings can be based in reality. Poverty, chronic pain or illness, toxic relationships, or difficult working conditions can all lead to depression based on very real and difficult to change circumstances. Even when a person escapes those circumstances, they could continue to be depressed because of the fear that the future could just bring a return to those same circumstances.

Linda Esposito (LCSW) recommends having faith in uncertainty in life. What I think she means is that even though something bad could certainly happen, something good could also happen. If you are not open to seeing that good or looking for the good opportunity, then you could easily miss it.

She also recommends that when you become anxious or stressed, practice mindfulness and redirect yourself to the here and now. Doing so will free up mental reserves to be open to possibilities rather than predicting and then possibly causing your worse fears to occur.
