Measuring the Size of a Problem

One simple way to help our students reduce stress, anxiety and reframe their thoughts is to teach them how to gauge how big of a problem they are having. A lot of times kids think all of their problems and concerns are equally important.

By teaching them to gauge how big their problem is, our students can make better decisions about what to do about them and also change how they think about that problem.

One way to sort problems is by deciding how much help you need to solve them:

Green Level: This problem is small, maybe between you and another student and it does not need help from an adult to solve.

Yellow Level: This problem involves you and a few others and you need help from an adult.

Red Level: This problem will affect many people, take some time to solve, and requires a lot of help from an adult.

Other ways to sort problems are how annoying it is to you, how big is the change, temporary problem versus long-term problem, or giving classroom specific examples to compare their problem to in order to place it.

Medir el tamaño de un problema

Una forma sencilla de ayudar a nuestros estudiantes a reducir el estrés, la ansiedad y replantear sus pensamientos es enseñarles a medir la magnitud de un problema que están teniendo. Muchas veces los niños creen que todos sus problemas y preocupaciones son igual de importantes.

Si les enseñamos a calibrar la magnitud de su problema, nuestros alumnos podrán tomar mejores decisiones sobre qué hacer al respecto y también cambiar su forma de pensar sobre ese problema.

Una forma de clasificar los problemas es decidir cuánta ayuda necesita para resolverlos:

Nivel verde: Este problema es pequeño, tal vez entre tú y otro estudiante y no necesita la ayuda de un adulto para resolverlo.

Nivel amarillo: Este problema te involucra a ti y a algunos otros y necesitas la ayuda de un adulto.

Nivel rojo: Este problema afectará a muchas personas, llevará algún tiempo resolverlo y requiere mucha ayuda de un adulto.

Otras formas de clasificar los problemas son el grado de molestia, la magnitud del cambio, el problema temporal frente al problema a largo plazo, o dar a la clase ejemplos concretos con los que comparar su problema para situarlo.
