#meettheteachermonday
- May 6th, 2024
Yay for Mondays! This year, we will start each week by introducing a different school faculty member in our new #MeetTheTeacherMonday posts. We hope this will help you get to know the fantastic staff...
Each week we will be sharing a tip from our school psychologist, Mrs. Rollins.
Combatting Depression Tip 7
The last tip is to find your social support network and use it. People think that being social is more important to girls than boys, but studies show that’s not true. All of us need connection in order to reduce feelings of loneliness and depression. Social connection also helps us have better health outcomes and live longer.
Social connection isn’t just people reaching out to us, but the social exchange where we get and give in the relationship(s) is most effective. As you read through the types of support it may bring fond memories of people that you or your child have been supported by in this way or who you have supported. The three types of social support are:
People typically find social connections through different groups like family, work, romantic relationships/partnership, religious community, or social activity (sports, common interest meet-up groups, gaming, gym classes, library activity groups, etc).
If you or your student are looking for more social connections, it requires getting out there. It can be intimidating, but doing this can help with avoiding rumination, focusing on the positive, re-framing thoughts about the past or future, incorporating structure, and flipping the switch from victim to survivor. Basically, it supports all the other tips, so go find your people!
