Each week we will be sharing a tip from our school psychologist, Mrs. Rollins.

Let’s Establish Some Healthy Habits:

Strategy 3: Rewards

This strategy seems like a no-brainer. We do rewards all the time for accomplishments to mark our good work, but when trying to make something a habit a physical or extrinsic reward may do the opposite, because it suggests to our minds that this reward marks the end of that behavior. Effective rewards in forming long-lasting habits work in two ways: they are tied to intrinsic feelings (i.e. this object reminds me of how good it feels to keep my habit) or it contributes to continuing your habit.

For example, if you are trying to get a student to write more in class and they met a short-term goal you had for them, you could give them a special pencil that had their favorite superhero/Disney princess/book character on it. Now every time they write, they are reminded of how hard they work on this skill and they are excited to write more. Maybe you have a student or a friend who had a goal to read more, then their reward for increasing this habit is access to a desired book which keeps their reading habit going.

Why We Shouldn’t Reward Ourselves for Good Habits–With One Exception
