Each week we will be sharing a tip from our school psychologist, Mrs. Rollins.
How to help our students develop Executive Functioning skill weaknesses.
When we talk about what to do to help our students improve executive functioning skills, there is one general thing we can do: Lend them our frontal lobe! Help create structures and systems that teach them to use these skills.
Teachers in elementary grades identified task initiation, sustained attention, and response inhibition as the executive functioning skills they thought students struggle with the most. In this psych tip, I’m going to talk about what we do to help with these key skill deficits for our elementary students.
Just like a baby learning to crawl, we block off stairs or the kitchen with a gate (boundary) because of the danger they pose. When they can navigate that area safely, then the gate is removed. Likewise when we teach students to stop impulsive behavior in favor of alternative acceptable behaviors, then we no longer have to enforce the strict boundary.
