Provo City School District

Sunset View Elementary School

Today, we share a quick note from our school librarian, Miss Fisher, about the fun things that she has planned for October.

October marks the beginning of this year’s Provo Reads program. This is when all the schools in the district focus on a common theme in the library and read books/a book related to that theme. Last year we focused on the book Wishtree by Katherine Applegate, as I’m sure many of you are familiar with. This year we are doing things a little differently and focusing more on an overall theme rather than just one book in particular. This year our theme is ‘Reading Opens Windows to the World.’

With this theme, we will be focusing on reading books primarily from the nonfiction section of the library. We will change the section we focus on every month. Each month, we will focus on a specific topic related to the overall theme, and if students read books relating to this topic they will be entered into a drawing to win free books. For the month of October, our specific topic is Reading Opens Windows to Exploration. I have set up a small exploration book display in the library and any students who read books about exploring can enter their name into the drawing. This topic is great because students can make almost any book fit into the exploration topic.

For parents with 3rd – 6th grade students, just a quick reminder that this month we are also starting to put together our Battle of the Books teams. Students should have one book from the booklist read by the week of October 14th if they want to qualify for a team. I will finalize teams over fall break and then we will begin preparing to battle in January.

We appreciate Miss Fisher and all that she does to help our students find success in reading.
