Library Happenings This Month
Hello Parents! Below is a quick note from our librarian, Miss Fisher.
Hello,
This month is going to be a busy one in the library as we head into some fun activities for the new year. We are continuing our Provo Reads program with the theme, Reading Opens Windows to Heroes Past and Present. We are focusing on reading books from the 900s section of the library which contains biographies and stories about the everyday heroes around us. Students who choose to read books about someone they consider to be a hero can enter their name into a drawing for free books that will be given away at the end of the month!
In line with our Provo Reads theme, we are celebrating black history month this week by talking about the underground railroad and show way quilts. We are reading books together about some of the heroes who made the underground railroad possible and students are working together to color their own show way quilt squares. These squares will be hung up in the KIVA to create a school show way quilt. We encourage you to take a minute to stop by the KIVA and take a look at their work sometime this month.
During the last week of this month, we will begin having our first Battle of the Books battles during library time as well! Teams in class will be competing against each other to test their knowledge of the books they have been reading. During this battle no team will be eliminated, however, they will be earning points that will help them during the first elimination battle next month. If you or your students have any questions about this please let us know. We are very excited to get the battles going!
Lastly, our second and final book fair of the school year is coming up the first week of February and we wanted to give you all a heads up.
Thank you all so much for your support of the things that we do in the library. We are looking forward to all the things happening this month and throughout the rest of the year!
We are so lucky to have Miss Fisher as a part of our Sunset Family!
