Specialties Spotlight – Library with Mrs. Hunt
This month in the library students will be learning about the Caldecott and Newbery Medals. These are the two most prestigious book awards for children’s literature. The Caldecott is awarded to the book determined to be the most distinguished American picture book for children. The Newbery medal is awarded to the book recognized as the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children. Students will be able to participate in a mock Caldecott/Newbery committee and vote on which books they think will win the medals. When the actual awards are announced later this month they will be able to see if any of their choices were selected and examine the actual winners. This fun activity allows students to critically examine the pictures and content of new books that have come out in the past year and identify important characteristics of high-quality literature. Students will get to examine the lives and careers of a variety of authors and illustrators and hopefully discover some new books they want to read! This activity is always a favorite and we are excited to do it again this year!
