Patrons Right to Know

Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary School Act (ESEA), requires that local educational agencies (LEAs) and schools provide specific information to parents. This information includes:

  • Information on the level of achievement and academic growth of the student. ESEA Sec. 1112(e)(1)(B)(i)
  • Timely notice if their child has been assigned to, or taught, for 4 or more consecutive weeks by a teacher who does not meet applicable State certification or licensure requirements for the grade level or subject area taught. ESEA Sec. 1112(e)(1)(B)(ii)
  • Timely information about Title I programs and if requested, opportunities for regular meetings to provide suggestions and to participate, as appropriate, in decisions relating to the education of their children. ESEA Sec. 1116(c)(4)
  • A description and explanation of the curriculum and assessments used to measure student progress. ESEA Sec. 1116(c)(4)(B)
  • The opportunity to be involved in the planning, review, and improvement of the school’s program unless the school already has a process in place for involving parents (with adequate representation). ESEA Sec. 1116(c)(3)
  • The right to receive and be part of the development and review of the school and LEA Parent and Family Engagement Policy. ESEA Sec. 1116(a)(2)(A) and 1116(c)(3)
  • The right to be notified in a format and language—to the extent practicable—that parents can understand. ESEA Sec. 1116(b)(1) and Sec. 1116(e)(5)
