Third Grade Learns Goal Ball
Ms. Brittany joined Coach T in PE recently to teach one of our third grade classes how to play goal ball.
“Goalball is the most popular team sport for the blind and visually impaired. The sport originated in 1946 when Austrian Hanz Lorrenzen and German Sett Reindle developed the game as a way to keep blinded WWII veterans physically active. Goalball has since become the premier team sport for blind athletes and is played competitively in 112 countries.” – US Association of Blind Athletes.
The Goal ran each side of the gym. Students were put into one of three spots on the goal line. All students wear dark goggles, and take turns trying to roll a ball that makes noise to the opposite goal without it being blocked. If the ball makes it past the line, a point is scored. If a students uses their body to stop the ball, they prevent a point from being scored. The room has to be quiet so that the players can hear the ball and move accordingly.
