Please click the link for each teacher to view the video of what our students have been working on in that class. We are so impressed with what our students and been able to create and accomplish as they have worked with Ms. Wilson (Art), Mrs. Valdez (Music), Miss Fisher (Library), and Coach Tessem (P.E) to study and learn different parts of their grade-level social studies curriculum throughout the year.

Kindergarten / Jardín de infancia

Kindergarteners learned a little bit about the flag of the United States through songs and books. They practiced and memorized facts about the flag and its symbols. In PE, students added movement to the song they learned in music. After learning about how symbols are used in flags, students created their own designs and images to make their own personal flags. Which you can see them waiving in this video.

First Grade / Primer Grado

First Graders learned more regarding community helpers by singing about the jobs they do. During library time, they discussed different community heroes each week and the jobs that they do. Each child selected a community helper job they might want to have in the future and made their own uniforms and ID badges! Students also made their own houses and populated a creative city.

Second Grade / Segundo Grado

Sunset View Dragons believe in having good character. The Second Graders learned more about what that means with their “Character Song” and movements. They discussed each of the pillars of character and practiced identifying these traits as they read books and pointed about how those in the story exemplified the traits that they were learning about. To remember what good character looks like in practice, students picked a person special to them that they felt captured one of the traits of being a person of good character and painted that person’s portrait.

Third Grade / Tercer Grado

Who knew that Provo had a theme song?! The Third Graders! And boy, can they sing it well! Third Graders learned cardio drumming to go along with “Welcome Home” and talked about their favorite parts of Provo. They spent some time with guest speakers learning about Provo history and loved trying some of the old-fashioned candy that was first made in Provo! They discussed all the elements of culture and how we see them represented here in our own city. Students learned that Provo has a rich art culture, one that can be easily noticed when viewing the murals found all over the city. Students each submitted a mural proposal and then, as a class, selected one design to bring to life. They all worked together to make three fantastic works of art! Who knows, maybe you’ll see one when you are out on the town!

¡¿Quién sabía que Provo tenía un tema musical ?! ¡Los de tercer grado! Y chico, ¿pueden cantarlo bien? Fourth Grade / Cuarto Grado

The song the Fourth Graders sang has an interesting history. “Utah…This Is the Place” became the state song of Utah after a 4th-grade class, in 2003, talked to their local state representative and asked if the current song could be switched with this new song that was so much fun to sing. Our 4th Graders did a great job and had a lot of fun singing their state song. Our 4th Graders learned that square dancing is one of the state folk dances. Square dancing is a “Call Dance”. Students learned to listen and follow specific calls to dance together. Working in groups, students researched an aspect of Utah history/culture that started with a different letter of the alphabet. They created an art project representing what they researched and are excited to present their culminating project. Listening to all of the class’s presentations will give you an A-Z look at Utah!

Fifth Grade / Quinto Grado

The Fifth Grade presented an emotion-packed performance of what they learned about the Underground Railroad this year through song, movement, art, and spoken presentations. When they began learning the song, “Swing Low, Sweet Chariot”, they heard different performers who performed it in different ways, showing that one song can be approached in a variety of ways and create various types of feelings. The song “Stand Up” tells some of Harriet Tubman’s life and role with the Underground Railroad. Students worked hard to learn syncopated rhythms and coordinated movements with Cardio Drumming. Students discussed how songs, codes, and symbols were used to guide runaway slaves on the Underground Railroad including the possible use of quilts. Each student made a square of a whole quilt which you can see behind them in their performances. Students discussed how the Underground Railroad was used and took an in-depth look at some significant conductors: Harriet Tubman and William Still. They enjoyed reading books that told the accounts of different people’s journeys on the Underground Railroad.

Sixth Grade / Sexto Grado

Students in sixth grade had a lot of fun picking a country and learning all about the people who live there!

Miss Ika’s class enjoyed reading fairytales and fables from Norway and listening to some of the traditional instruments used during Viking times. They studied Viking history and learned more about the government, environment, and culture of those from Norway. After learning about the history of Heraldry, each student designed a personal coat of arms to represent their values, hopes, and dreams. Students practiced games that could have been used to determine who would be strong contenders in combat. They learned that “Toga Honk” is the Norse version of Tug of War. Two competitors sit with their feet braced against the others, and pull on a loop of rope. The winner is the one who pulls the other person across a middle line. They also did traditional Tug of War, as well as other “Feats of Strength” games. Norweigan sailors sang sea chanties to help them while doing the hard work it takes to sail a ship. The 6th Graders learned the chanty “Cape Cod Chanty”, a cute song from the East.

Mrs. Hostetter’s class enjoyed learning about the history and culture of India, especially talking about some traditional art styles, Bollywood music, yoga, food, and unique sports that people in the country enjoy. Students learned to practice yoga, moving through poses, focusing on breath, and being mindful. These students also designed and carved their own stamps. Using all their stamps together, they created several intricate mandalas inspired by the Hindu and Buddhist meditation practices that are common in India. In music they learned a song that is sung during the five-day Festival of Lights called “Deepavali”.

Mr. Evan’s class enjoyed learning about the culture of China by discussing its geography, economy, history, music, literature, and notable individuals. The song “Jasmine Flower”, is a part of the music curriculum in Provo School District that is a beautiful, beloved, Chinese folk song. Students learned Tai Chi, an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. Students also learned the rich tradition of shadow puppetry that is found in every region of China. Students each made their own shadow puppets and stage which can be used when lit from the back.

Mrs. Morriss’s class loved studying the culture of the Philippines as they researched the country’s history, government, location, music, sports, and festivals during library. They particularly enjoyed getting to listen to stories read in Tagalog, the national language of the Philippines. They learned a favorite children’s Tagalog folk song about a crab, “Tong, Tong, Tong, Tong!” To cap off their studies, students learned about a local festival called MassKara! The festival of a thousand smiles. Being inspired by the elaborate, colorful masks featured at the festival, students designed, painted, and decorated their very own MassKara Mask. Students also learned one of the most popular folk dances in the Philippines, the Tinikling. Students learned steps and then helped choreograph their routine. Some of the students even chose to use their MassKara Masks while performing.
