Each week we will be sharing a tip from our school psychologist, Mrs. Rollins.
Calming End-of-Year Stress
The end of the school year can be exciting and incredibly stressful for teachers, parents, and students. End-of-year testing, projects, grades, and anxiety about what the next year brings can be on everyone’s minds. For some students summer break can bring fun activities, time with extended family, and good weather. For other students it could mean a lack of connection with friends, missing extra positive attention from adults, lack of structure in the day, and less food if they depend on meals from school.
When we are under stress our brains become reactive and emotional. Stress can hijack our pre-frontal cortex which helps us think through choices and consequences, plan, prioritize, problem solve, and emotionally regulate. Our students that display anger or defiance at the end of the year could really just be worried about, rather than relieved by, summer break.
An article from Edutopia suggests 5 ideas on activities that might help with end-of-year stress for students.
Hopefully, these suggestions help you and your student get through the stress of the end of the year and bring some calm and good mental health for the summer break.
