Each week we will be sharing a tip from our school psychologist, Mrs. Rollins.

Preventing Conflict with Ready-Made Choices

How many of us hate arguing, but are easily sucked into an argument anyway? How many times do we wish conflicts could be resolved easily and quickly? These 6 alternatives to conflict give us easy to remember choices when we have a stressful or upsetting interaction.

  1. A compromise usually means one or each person in the conflict must give in a little or try to combine their ideas in order to have everyone get a little of what they want. Can’t agree between baseball and soccer at recess, play kickball. Can’t decide what to have for dinner when going out? Go to a buffet.
  2. Using agreement looks like one person just deciding to agree with the other to end the argument. This is the best way to go to end an argument fast, but it can’t always be the solution. Have a friend that wants to play tag at recess every day? One of those times, just go with it to not have the same argument. Then use your agreement as leverage to get your way tomorrow.
  3. Making a deal often looks like a “First/Then” agreement. First, we will play on the monkey bars, then we will play wall ball. If you used agreement the day before, this is where you can pull out that leverage and say that we did what you wanted yesterday, so first can we do my activity, and then can we do yours?
  4. Using leave it to chance most often looks like doing rock/paper/scissors or flipping a coin. The idea is to play some kind of quick easy game to help the group decide which choice to go with or who wins the argument. This only works if all the people agree to go with the outcome of the game of chance.
  5. Getting help from an adult is a generic name for this, but it’s really just getting another opinion from someone outside of the conflict. They could reach out to a peer to help, but often in school an adult provides that outside opinion or offers perspective they haven’t thought of. Sometimes the adult might direct them to use one of these other choices.
  6. Agree to Disagree often looks like just walking away from an argument. There are times when you just can’t agree with someone else and they are not going to agree with you. In these cases, it’s good to walk away from that issue. It’s good to have a diversity of thought and preference, so there’s sometimes no need to try and make everyone agree.
